They were the living representation of The Elements of Harmony and were/are important to the world to show that any, now living, being can be just as important. Glimmy’s importance was that she was able to live a well life with true friendship. Being famous should be seen as a bonus, and shouldn’t matter during one’s life.

Argyle didn’t know about Starlight. She’s probably only the first of Twilight’s many students. Sunny says to Sprout “ponies don’t use their magic on each other.” This is false. Starlight attacked many ponies with her magic. Including Twilight. Argyle didn’t know about her.
