Yep, exactly. And mind you all we have seen of G5 is a single 90 minute film, so naturally the directors didn’t want to include too many locations as that would have resulted in the film feeling quite bloated, something that the 2017 MLP Movie was criticized for. As such, I can understand why the writers wanted to focus on three core locations, one for each pony race, with Maretime Bay being the central location. With the ponies reunited, and with the upcoming series having an overall longer run time than the movie did, there will be more room to explore more locations going forward. After all, you never reveal everything in the very first film. You show the characters, lay out the stakes, and show the core locations first. Then you evolve from there.

That’a true, we did visit many other locations in G4, and we might do so in G5 as well. Neither of which are in the picture, so it kind of fits the theme. But those three were the main ones, at least early on.

Also, keep in mind that the three cities shown in the film aren’t the only ones we will see in the TV series in the future. After all, in G4 we saw many different cities outside of Canterlot and Ponyville. So while you have your point on the purposes of the cities, that still doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t see the actual cities of Ponyville and Canterlot going into the future. After all, there would be no better way to fully connect the two generations than to revisit those G4 locations.

The OP’s intention perhaps wasn’t necessarily to say that those are the very same places, but that they might fill the same purpose in their respective generations. That is: Maretime Bay as the small town where the majority of the plot might take place, Zephyr Heights as the big clean royal city, and Bridlewood as… well, a forest.

Oh, is this one of those comparisons, where people seem to think that because Zephyr Heights is on a mountain, it must be where Canterlot once stood, or because Bridlewood is in a forest, it must obviously be the Everfree Forest? I thought we got this out of our systems after litigating the movies after it was released…

No, more like a realist. If I were a purist, would I seriously have the subtitle of ‘Sunny Starscout fan’? I love ‘a New Generation’, and I really excited to see what G5 brings to the table, especially considering it is an evolution of what we saw in G4. All I am saying here is that the towns seen in ‘a New Generation’ aren’t necessarily the same as what we saw in G4. Equestria is a big place, and chances are the G5 towns are in places that we didn’t see in the prior series.

Not only that, but Zephyr Heights existed during G4 due to what we saw below the pegasus castle. In other words, all three cities are not related to what we saw in G4 in any way. Frankly, this makes me hope that we eventually will get to see what has become of the old G4 cities of Ponyville and Canterlot in the TV series. Even if they have fallen into ruin thanks to them being abandoned by the three species of pony, it would certainly still be interesting to see.
