They have many more moments than other ships combined. Although that does not mean that it is the best relationship in MLP, it will always be my favorite ship.

Explorer in Training
My headcanon is Rarity doesn’t see herself overworking Spike. Because not only did she have to do the same things for employers when she was his age, she had to do way tougher jobs and often without sleep. So to Rarity she is being quite mild compared to what others made her do like trying to sneak into a dragon’s lair to retrieve her employer’s haircomb by herself. Adults were not as protective back then.
And anyways Spike is young and has to learn the meaning of hard work. Rarity has earned her right to be spoiled. Now it’s the younglings’ turn to work for their wealth.

To be fair, this was WAAAAAY back in season one, very early in the relationships of all the characters, not just Rarity and Spike. Also, in Rarity’s defense, he was trying to eat a gem without permission.

Bottom row, second pic from the left, from “Dog and Pony Show.” That one is kinda messed up. Spike spent his time helping her, and when they had collected only a tiny wagon of gems, she gave him one. He sacrificed that gem to locate her, only to find that she didn’t need rescuing. And when they had multiple large wagons full of gems, she snatched away the one he was eating. What the hell, Rarity?
Silver-Quill once pointed out that the comical misfortune of a character should only happen as a punishment, which they bring on themselves. Spike’s punishments almost always came from his efforts to help, most especially in “A Dog and Pony Show.”

I think the whole assistant of Rarity role only went well woth Molt Down. In that episode Rarity actually seemed to have a respectful not too sappy relationship with Spike. And she actually tried to help him! Or A Dog and a Pony Show where Rarity and Spike felt like they a professional relationshipm
Why couldn’t Dragon Quest or episodes have done that?
