Description

In the not too distant future, Next sunday A.D…
Paying tribute to one of my favourite shows of all time with a quick doodle. I think it’s fun.
The movie is “Soultaker,” and has some of my favourite riffs.
If BigBuggyBastage doesn’t comment on this I will be very upset.

I hear you! I think boring films are probably one of the worst “offenses” a filmmaker can commit. But I’ll postulate that it was John Agar that put you out. 😆
jk Agar’s one of those old-school actors for whom I have a love/hate appreciation, sort of like he’s a discount bin John Wayne. If you wanna laugh your socks off at a classic-style Sci-Fi film starring John Agar, watch The Brain from Planet Arous (1957). The Mads (Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff) riffed it live, back in November 2020, and I’ve had a cautious adoration for it since. If “floating brains from space” sounds like your bag, check it out!
There are flicks that Best Brains rejected for the show, mostly for not having enough material to riff, and others, well… One that comes to mind is Child Bride, an “educational” (!) film made in the 1930s to bring to light the lack of legal protection against child marriage in many states at the time. I’ve seen it, and it’s got some fodder for riffing, but man, after watching those squicky scenes where the older hillbillies are talking about “marryin’ young’ins,” I just wanted to pour bleach in my ears and cry.
I’ll end on a happier note. The Girl in Lovers Lane, the episode from which I took my avatar, is one my Dad and I really like. We couldn’t get enough of Jack Elam in that one! But that’s okay, we tend to see him fairly often in Gunsmoke episodes, almost always playing a bad guy. But he does it better than almost anybody. :)

Some episodes are difficult because there’s just not enough in the film to make fun of. The Mole People was one where I actually fell asleep watching. It was bad because it was boring, not because it was full of ridiculous mistakes that gave fodder for riffing. Those are the hardest ones.

Ha! Nice. :)
For me, Danger! Death Ray is a difficult sit. It’s not bad at all, certainly not as bad as Hamlet (to me), but I seem to prefer experiments with very memorable characters and a certain “cheese factor,” let’s call it. Episodes where the guys are all following the story, making cracks on similar things – how many times did Chase put his knee up in The Giant Gila Monster?! – and doing host segments themed around the film, e.g. Cave Dwellers. There are a few, like Space Mutiny, where the jokes are great and I’m laughing my arse off from beginning to end. But some, like Project Moonbase and Moon Zero Two, it seems nobody loves but me!
FWIW, I believe I have a copy of every (original run) episode of the show, including the KTMA and Season 1 episodes. They’re great to view every now and then, and I consider them a window into my earlier life; it’s always fun to discover a joke that I get now, but flew over my head back then.

Joe Estevez and Robert Z’Dar: how the Hell weren’t these two cast in Pumaman together?! Not that it’d have been any good, but seeing Joe Estevez fly like a moron would’ve been so, so precious. [chef’s kiss]
Or maybe they could’ve been together in that horribly-edited compilation of Gemini Man episodes, called Riding with Death. Could Z’Dar have pulled off the Canadian-Redneck-Trucker-Racecar-Driver role? Would Joe have been up to the task of turning invisible, getting beat up by other truckers, and being a secret agent of an organization no one’s heard of? Only the occupiers of another, far more fortunate timeline will know.
If BigBuggyBastage doesn’t comment on this I will be very upset.
Shhh, no tears now. I’m here.
