oooh oooh! how about haku being a blank flank until chiharu frees him from yubaba, then it reappears as a picture of a river or something?

the paper doll could be a representative of the japanese magical practice of Onmyōdō, which includes the spells for Shikigami (paper doll spirits). even though we see Yubaba using them, haku was learning magic from her, and can probably also make shikigami.
 
but maybe im over thinking it.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Shouldn’t the paper dolls be the witch’s mark? Haku was more centered around duality. Dragon and Human, Friend and Enemy, He that ruins and He that saves.
