It doesn’t happen every night, but it happens enough. How it goes varies. Sometimes I’m falling. Sometimes I’m burning. Sometimes there’s a door closing faster than I can reach it, leaving me in darkness forever. Sometimes it’s…something else. Worse things. Worse ways.
And all the while I hear Ahuizotl’s mocking voice echoing in my mind, that one question he asked me that I’ve never really been able to shake no matter how hard I try.
“Do you ever think about dying, Daring Do?”
…yeah. Sometimes I wonder how it’ll happen. Will it be a slip? A wrong turn? A botched bit of timing? Something I didn’t see in time out of the corner of my eye? I don’t exactly live a normal life; I don’t know if I’m still entitled to the luxury of mere natural causes anymore.
“I’m not afraid of death.” That’s what I tell everyone, trusted ally or looming overconfident enemy alike. And most of the time that’s true. But every once in a while, I’ll say it and not even believe my own voice…
