Well yes, but actually no. Spanish piña shares a similar etymology: conquistadors saw the fruit and thought it resembled a pinecone. If anything, English inherited the word from Spanish, calquing piña into “pine.”

The “apple” half is more poëtic: the word could also be used for any sort of fruit (similar to French pomme de terre, “potato” (lit. “apple of the earth”)).

And it even fits as a topping for a pizza!

It’s weirld so many fruits are named after each other even if they don’t have relationship to each other.

It depends on your definition of European language - over here our word for pineapple is quite different from the word from banana, but apparently they do things differently in Portugal.

Apparently English is the only (European) language where the word for pineapple doesn’t share an etymology with banana (then again, it’s also literally the only language where the word for bassoon isn’t a variation of faggot), the word “pineapple” literally means “pinecone fruit” or “pine tree fruit”. “Apple” actually just means “fruit”, hence crab apples, and it’s the reason the Biblical Fruit of Wisdom is depicted as an apple (I believe it’s actually supposed to be some sort of extinct high-in-non-narcotic-sugar relative of the orange once native to Ethiopia/Somalia and/or the Middle East)
