“But… I love her.”
“If you really love her, you’ll let her go.”

ive been toying with some ideas about changing velvet’s motives just a little bit. the idea i had is that royal flush, velvets father and twilights grandpappy, wanted to be royalty himself. his way of doing this was to push Spectacle towards princesshood, however when Spectacle ran off he switched his focus to Velvet.
While Spectacle was magically gifted, Velvet was not, and no amount of tutoring or pushing from Royal could change that. Velvet then fell in love with Night Light, and became pregnant not long after leaving high school - which snuffed out any last chances of princesshood for her (at least in Royal’s eyes). He never quite gets over this, holding a lot of resentment for his daughter up until the day he died. Meanwhile, Velvet was doing everything she could to appease him. But nothing worked.
Having been unable to make her father proud, and as a way of almost living vicariously through her kids, Velvet pushed the same impressions onto Twilight and Shining - Especially on Twilight, who showed signs of being magically gifted at a young age. And this time, she succeeded.
Her view on Rainbow Dash is that she’s just a distraction to Twilight. I think I’m taking out the homophobia side of things (since it just doesnt make sense in the mlp world), and more so leaning into the idea that any potential partner Velvet wanted for Twilight had to further her status in some way. It wasn’t about love or happiness, she needed to find someone that matched her status or even elevated it, and to her, Rainbow didn’t do that.
tldr velvets got projection issues
