The MIG-17 was actually a bit more successful against USAF strikes than MIG-21 because they were a little better at avoiding US MIGCAP F-4s but yeah, the ability of the North Vietnamese pilots to sneak around US MIGCAP and get to the bombers was very impressive and the lessons learned lead to both the US and the Soviets revamping their training into a more Vietnamese/Israeli style and would set up the stunning victories of the Gulf War.
