Allegedly it’s because the writers for G5 didn’t know that any and all references to G4 require paying funds to discovery family, meaning that every reference to G4 cost money and when hasbro is as penny pinching as they have been, it means all direct G4 references are shrunk or removed. This would be why Spike can have his colors and name but he doesn’t look anything like any G4 iteration.
Still doesn’t forgive how lazy this pony shaped thing is. He doesn’t even have hands, I mean come on. Writing was one of his key talents.
