Damn, that sounds really bad.
Based on the stories of what Fae were like, it seems extremely likely that the myth of the changeling arose from attempts to explain autism.
This may interest you but changelings in European culture were pixies or any magical creature including fairies who exchange their children for a human baby or in this case a pony pretending to be one.
