Here’s the issue I have with him (as a person, not a character): the reason Shinji did not think anyone cared about him was that they were not constantly gratifying his accomplishments in spite of the fact that he, a: Repeatedly demonstrated his lack of appreciation for the seriousness of the situation because of his own far less world-shattering demons, and b: Repeatedly demonstrated zero interest in their own equally prevalent, if not WORSE demons, as he was too busy navel-gazing. I mean, hot damn, when REI is the only person in your circle of friends who is close to being self-actualized, you’ve got problems…that he refused to fix.
 
Also, it’s telling that the people whose deaths he actually grieved were people that were either not terribly close to him, or people who wanted to slaughter all of mankind…or didn’t want to, but he was too selfish to listen to their real desires. Again, it all comes back to Shinji.
 
…I mean, it’s all brilliantly written, but it makes me dislike Shinji personally. XDDDD

That is a very… strange viewpoint. I think it’s more an issue that he didn’t believe anyone cared for him combined with having just seen the few people who he did care about brutally killed convinced him that removing all boundaries between people was the right thing to do.

Considering I consider Shinji Ikari to be one of the most selfish people in all of anime, simultaneously self-loathing and self-aggrandizing to the point of it being a mania on his part, and entirely willing to destroy humanity- not because he wasn’t loved, but because he WAS and that love wasn’t enough for him - it remains an apt comparison.
 
Although at least with Shinji, it’s portrayed with some mild sympathy and nuance, whereas Bella Swan’s portrayal turns her from a pathetic yet understandable tool into a blatant Faustian supervillain. XD

I can kinda see that. Always calling Unit-01 “Twilight”, headcanons about which Israfel was secretly good, replacing “WHY WON’T YOU BE NICE TO ME?!” with “haters gonna hate”, screaming when 3rd Impact starts because those wings make Unit-01 look kind of like an alicorn.

And somehow, from inside Unit-01, which is riding a giant Rarity, Shinji is still being all mopey. Your dad doesn’t define you unless you let him, Shinji! Have other concerns!
