That’s incorrect. Earthworms are not self-aware. They react to stimuli, sure, but so do computers. Sentience refers to the possession of consciousness, of character- which earthworms or other lower lifeforms are not complex enough to possess.
 
Another common comparison is ‘can they suffer’ and while earthworms can certainly give the appearance of suffering, the fact of the matter is that they are not sufficiently developed for what we conceive pain as to be anything other than an indicator of harm.
 
So no, earthworms are not sentient. A dog or a cat? That’s different.
