That wasn’t a strawman argument. A strawman argument would be one which misrepresents the opponent’s viewpoint then goes on to debunk this false opponent.

His argument was something of a misrepresentation of reality (although not by much, imo).

Nice picture though - I’ll save it for future use.

Not just in the pilot. They are all like that in all the episodes unless it’s a episode centered aroud that character sepparately. Character growth happens in episodes like “Read it and Weep” or “Dragonshy”, while other characters may appear flat - but that’s simpliy because it’s not their spotlight. EqG was centared only partially around all them (kinda like in Dragonshy or Crystal Empire), plus, it WAS the first time we were seing their HUMAN versions, so I don’t get what more were you expecting from them.

EqG was clearly centered around Twilight - and she did get quite development. Hating the wings, being lost and stultified in human world, trying to learn abot the new world, meeting new friends, awkward crush, being concerned about the new world, addmiting her new wings are nothing compared to human body.

The difference is that the characters were exaggerated in the pilot because it was the first time we were seeing them. We’ve had 3 whole seasons of character growth, and we’ve become a lot more familiar with them over that time. The characters Twilight encountered in EqG felt flat and unrefined in comparison.

While I can agree about the plot - it was basically remixed S1 pilot - I don’t see what were you expecting with the mane 6 characters. Flaws you pointed apply more like to Sunset Shimmer or Flash, but mane 6 were about the same as in pilot with added human stuff - actually they only present something more in episodes centered aroud them sepparately. As for jokes, it actually just depend on whethever you like fanservice-type jokes or not. I didn’t found the forced at all, they were placed so the make sense. The audiences in theathers were indeed giggling all the time.

I was thinking the original animated one which as others have pointed out, killed off several characters to introduce new ones. (Read: BUY MORE TOYS)

The jokes are the same - the exact same ones, actually. There’s a bit of originality here and there, particularly to do with Twilight and Spike adapting to the new world, but the film is absolutely filled with in-jokes and references which feel far too forced to be funny.

The plot is almost exactly the same as the first two episodes of season 1, except it has more holes and less developed characters. It just feels like they tried to go for “subtle allusions” but stumbled right into “bad parody”.

The writing feels, at times, ham-fisted. It’s almost like the writers were given nothing but single-line character descriptions: “Rainbow Dash likes sport and says ‘AWESOME’ a lot. Pinkie Pie is silly and crazy and likes parties. Applejack likes apples. Fluttershy is shy and likes animals.”

The funny thing is, most people agree that S1 E1-2 aren’t the best episodes, but I still feel they are still vastly superior to EqG.

I fail too see the big difference in execution. I see just about the same level of quality of writing, plotholes, jokes as in season 1 or any other season. EqG just has different setting and more demanding audience. I remember back when season 1 was aroud, people were finding all sorts of gliches and constraints in it, yet no one was using that declare downfall of show’s quality. Replace humans with ponies, and you have an ordinary MLP episode.

Actually, the original TF Movie added new characters. They are just old characters by now.
Then New Bots: Hot Rode/Rodimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, Kup, Arcee, Springer, Blurr, Wheelie
Then New Cons: Galvatron, Cyclonus, Scourge, atleast the latter being an Army Builder.
Also Sharkticons, which were sold under the name Gnaw and as Decepticons.

TV is a different medium than theater
TV is highly commercialized, so making a show for merch is a common thing, but movies are not as commercialized(example is length of movies and no commercial interruptions, may be some trailers in the beginning but never breaks the movie in pieces to show merch)

It’s worth remembering that MLP:FiM was created for the same reason - to sell pony toys. The key difference is in execution.

Faust and her team aimed to go above and beyond the requirements of a 22 minute commercial, and they managed to produce a genuinely good show. I don’t think the same passion was present when creating EqG, not least because the creative team had far less freedom to create the movie they wanted to create.

It was always planned to go to TV and at this pace. The theater run was never intended to be a money maker. (And as the linked article points out they actually had to add showings due to its success on limited screens).

The money in this is the toy line. A 2.5 month period of non-TV exclusivity is just the right length to pull some money from before that tail falls flat.
