It’s not a formality, it’s about being considerate, which is just a component of basic decency and should extend to all people, lovers much moreso than acquaintances. Assuming there’s no sub/dom play going on, both participants should make sure the other is satisfied. And sure, being in love is about having a person who would give anything for you without expecting anything in return, but intentionally making your lover go the extra mile for you and not doing anything to repay them when you easily could is selfish.
 
From what I’ve experienced, both men and women who are selfish in bed are generally pretty selfish in everything else they do. So it’s really not a good indicator if someone isn’t willing to go through the effort of making sure you’re satisfied as well.
