Actually, Sweet Apple Acres’ financial problems are because Applejack handles the finances. The girl can kick a tree like none’s business, but when it comes to math, she’s almost literally a fish out of water.

Pictures like this make me think this guy cant have had a fun life. Though it doesnt quite match up to what we know little mac looked like.
 
I mean, basically he’s the man of the farm and has been since he was a kid. Looking after his fragile granny and two younger sisters by himself since his parents abandoned them/exploded/turned into stars.
 
We already know he does the majority of the farm work by himself. Applebuck season taught us that since Applejack worked day and night almost constantly and still only managed to do half the work by the time they would usually finish. That tells us that Macintosh must do way more than his little sister normally.
 
Add to that the much underlined poor financial state of the farm, seems like a crappy life all around.
 
In return he doesnt really seem to get much respect, and barely leaves the farm. You wonder what his special talent could be, or if he ever had any amibiton to do something not-farming.
