The genre went even further back in Japan. The Tale of Genji, a novel from the 11th century have a section on how a young man raise his niece to be his ideal waifu and later marries her.

Technically, she’s a robot actually. Basically what you did in the game was educate, and teach her stuff. Then depending on how you taught her, the game’s story will play out differently. Something like that.
I remember reading about that obscure Japan-only N64 game in an old Nintendo Power magazine. Gatta give the artist kudos for referencing something so obscure.

Princess Maker first came out in 1991 on floppy diskettes and runs on DOS.
Wonder Project J came out in 1994 for the Super Nintendo.

You can read more about the game here. There was also a Japanese Super Famicom prequal that came out before it, as well that featured a robot boy instead.
