Thats because each “Episode” was about what Twenty-Five minutes (or so…) long, and Stories usually ran anywhere from Four to Six “Episodes”.  
On the One side its a better format from the storytellers side… (Thus why Old Who = BEST WHO! Rickety Sets held together with Gaffer Tape, and Bug-men with Cardboard Costumes… Or not!)  
While on the other assuming you grew-up on the PBS Broadcasts of Old Who… Which in all honesty did drag on longer then it should have by some Two and a half Hours at right smack in the middle of the night. Thank goodness for ßetamax, and VHS back then…

Funny en ough just watched the 6th Doctor Special on BBCA. As a newbie to classic Who, I thought it was interesting, Those old episodes REALLY drag though :/

I find that a lot of people wrongfully judge him by his first few episodes.
 
It’s a shame that Colin didn’t get a long enough tenure on TV to undergo the character development he had planned for 6, but he got the chance to do it in the audio dramas.

Sixth = BEST DOCTOR… Next to the Fourth that is…

Such an underrated Doctor. His audio adventures are friggin awesome.
