Hopefully, depending on if there are other mlp conventions going on even after mlp fim has ended and pony life will soon be coming to TV.
Yeah, if you pay attention to what - and how - Elfman’s singing, let alone watch the music video, it becomes very clear this is not a song that approves of men dating girls.
Elfman’s stated any number of times that the song was written as a satire piece aimed at making any number of old-men-dating-far-too-young women in the entertainment industry feel awkward about themselves.
As he put it himself, “I was writing pieces from the mindset of various people I’d read about in magazines or newspapers and was pretty much out to offend everybody.”
Who knew?!
P.s. While we’re at it lets also tag this as DEVO
This is what “Rainbow Rocks” should be.
I for one second that.
I’m honestly not sure myself whether that made it worse or the worst, really. But there’s been far too much bullshit ‘real world equivilence’ foisted into the comics lately, especially when it relates to backstory. Smacks of shameless attempt to dilute it away from its uniqueness and make it more like every other terrible kids show out there now. “Look, these characters were wacky schoolkids just like you/we were before the adventure and royalty and chaotic spirits invading their livelihood!” This is gonna be Archie with hooves.
While I agree that turning the characters into interchangeable parts for the purpose of plugging them into prefabricated plots and gags would be a bad thing, I can’t get terribly worried over that possibility when we’re talking about a storyline featuring two sketchily-defined characters in their high school years.
And anyway, that’s really unrelated to the issue of the lyrics being a reference; this scene would be just as much of a cliche and just as in-/out-of-character if Shining Armor had been singing lyrics completely unrelated to anything in the real world.
At least the comic couldn’t get any worse for me now, not even if they started filling it with Cupcakes and Rainbow Factory. I might be able to enjoy it now that it will never come this low in the pandering again. We are finally over the hump! (although it could have been gotten over much quicker by firing Cook, which I’d’ve done after the issue 2)
@DJLowrider
For an Oingo song that seems hella obscure. I thought this was Mando’s version since I never heard of that one in the first place, and I used to go to sleep to VH1 ages ago too. (they were never high up on my likability tier with so much saturation about, so I never owned any of their stuff. Music back then was annoyingly expensive, after all.)
Also nothing I linked is obscure. You’re just an isolationist yankee pig. If I were shooting for obscure I would link something like Annbjørg Lien
At any rate, I must seriously question how any of the target market would know of Oingo. Or at least the name. I think Dead Man Party was on a kidzbop commercial once.
To the artist’s wife, yes. And since you can still enjoy the panel without being familiar with the referenced song, I don’t see the problem with it.
Far more appealing.
Now there’s nothing wrong with liking obscure music. Hell, I dig J-Ska. But for purposes of having a shout-out and a somewhat obscure reference in the issue that people reading it might have an outside shot at actually understanding you could do far, far worse than Oingo Boingo.
Who are pretty damn awesome anyway.
Yeah, sorry, but I’m going to have to voice the opinion that the original Oingo Boingo song this is referencing is more appealing and less obscure to the comic’s target market than those three tracks.
I expect my pones devoid of Family Guy-level near-exact-reference ‘humour!’
@DJLowrider
Right, because fandom bullshit is so much better than Geraldine Olivier or Florian
@Background Pony
Petulant, much?
It’s Niggoslav, what did you expect?
