It’s all easier for everypony to just refer Celestia as “princess” instead of “By the Grace of Herself, The Elder Divine Queen Empress of Equinekind et cetera”, while still having an appleload of power. Besides, queens are Eeeevil because of Walt Disney.

@Drasvin New headcanon: Celestia and Luna used to be queens, but an irritable and sexist minotaur king once paid them a visit and refused to sit with females ‘as his equals.’ In order to secure important trades, they temporarily demoted themselves and wholly gave him the head of the table. Her servants continued to refer to her as such even after he left, and she found it quite charming, and ‘kept’ her ‘demotion’ over the millenia. Amusingly, the minotaur kingdom has never forgotten that they avoided a war over a touchy if petty subject by simply letting him have his way, and so every subsequent minotaur monarch arctually defer to the princesses, and still refer to them as ‘queens.’

I imagine ruling the night would be nice. Though that might just be me. I find night to be a lot more relaxing time. More serene. More beautiful. Sure, most will be asleep, but that also means the streets won’t be as crowded if one wishes to take a stroll down them.

Technically, Equestria isn’t a monarchy. It’s a diarchy as Celestia and Luna rule as equals. Also a principality can be a monarchical (or diarchical in this case) state. It simply means the title of the ruler(s) is prince or princess. Another difference between a kingdom and a principality would be relative size of territory (with a kingdom being bigger). Also in diplomatic functions, like a large banquet, noble rank determines who sits where, who defers to whom, forms of address, and all that fancy stuff.

the principalty could be just the region of Canterlot, but being actually a monarchy the whole country can be called Kingdom. that’s a bit more pompous, juwt what it needs.
