  1. I ship character A and character B because I think the narrative’s shown they’d be a good match and there’s plot momentum that’d put them together! An unhealthy obsession.
    Fixed that for you.

Yet consider that most background ponies like Comet Tail and the poorly-defined Flash Sentry are blank slates in terms of characterization.

So any attempt to flesh out a romance could just as easily be dismissed as transforming the male character into a self-insert.

Also, how do we determine if a fan-made character is a self-insert? It’s the initial assumption everyone makes, though we have no idea of the author’s actual personality.

Don’t think it’s hypocritical to think that shipping someone with yourself is sad and pathetic. Compare:

  1. I ship character A and character B because I think the narrative’s shown they’d be a good match and there’s plot momentum that’d put them together! A literary argument.

  2. I ship character A with my self-insert character to vicariously indulge in a romance fantasy, since I am overly attached to the idea they represent! An unhealthy obsession.

>ship ponies with eachother for fun
>get mad because someone ships them with himself
Dat brony hypocricy.

Challenge Set, Fighting for Her Heart and The Princess’ Champion all told the same story
  1. Flash challenges Comet
  2. The two fight
  3. Comet wins

But Twilight was standing next to Comet Tail in The Last Roundup. Surely that means they’re in love!

If Comet Tail’s your preferred ship, great. Yet I don’t understand why romance fans have to support their choice by tearing down an alternative.

Grrr! I’m so mad Twilight got stuck with that one-dimensional, personality-free cipher! I know! I’ll ship him with a different personality-free cipher!
