Rarity always envisioned an adult princly male as her heart’s goal. At the end of S1, that vision was for the most part crushed. While other characters like Fancy Pants did present themselves, Spike and Rarity’s relationship grew steadily stronger, and came to its peak at Secret of My Excess. Rarity’s perception of her life mate, and Spike, started to shift. It was a mature and gradual process. And by the end of the Nightmarity Arc, they were basically cuddling-level boyfriend and girlfriend, not ignoring the age difference, but embracing what they have right now.
 
Its mature and daring and really well done.

It’s honestly a very interesting ship, and not just because it’s cute. The concepts it implies are actually pretty cool. They appear to be really dedicated to it, and that’s nice.

Absolutely. Its surprising with how much tact their doing this age-gap ship but still going through with it. And IDW is just as good. Issues 7 and 8 made me proud to be a Spike fan.

The age difference makes this ship a tough sell, and the artists who make this work are good in my book.

I think they’re doing a good job of handling it on the show, where both characters are aware of it and it’s reciprocated, but they don’t actually act on it because of the implications and instead treat it more like a childish crush than anything. I like the idea the best that they’ll possibly act on it once they’re both adults, since the whole age-gap thing vanishes once both parties are adults.

His character is already as, if not more, mature than most 14/15 year olds. Plus, they leave him alone/let him go places alone constantly and he is personal acquaintances with adults.

There’s a lot of debate, and its the main reason some people hate this ship, but I’d say that’s roughly correct based on what we know.

If that is “physical” age it could be considering what zecora said on SoME, but let’s not forget that their maturity age is another different thing.

What is the age difference between these two, anyways? I’ve always figured about 7 years, since Twilight Sparkle looked the same age as the CMC when she hatched him, and I remember a comment on Lauren Faust’s DA saying the CMC are about 7.
