Be it on the show or in merchandising, Spike always gets shit on.
Which makes me wonder how strong the relationship will be when he eventually grows a little and for good. He might see his life totally differently.
I’ve heard that guess on Luna before and it holds no water at all. Twilight was the one that helped her socialize. The only reason for that look FOR that scene was either she looks doubtful on Celestia’s plan or she’s jealous of the attention Celestia gives to her daughte-oops I mean student…or most likely both.
I know. His fear of being kicked out is based on his inferiority complex of being really young and otherwise useless.
Add teenage body and hormones into that. Plus the power that comes with a growing dragon.
The things we are too generously grateful for when we are kids are different or conflicting with the repressed feelings we develop as we grow older and become more self-dependent.
His greatest fear is her kicking him out, not leaving on his own. He could do that, it’s not like society sees him as a monster. Even if he grew a little bit, he’s still more pony-like than any dragon ever.
I don’t think Luna is too terribly fond of Twilight. Maybe it’s something she fights with Celestia about.
But anyway, Spike. He’s hard to write for. I just hope that the Power Ponies episode is him kicking ass or something.
In other words, once Spike becomes a Teen, he’s gonna want to get Twilight and Celestia off his back. I sincerely doubt Twilight’s current relationship with Spike is going to survive when and if Spike becomes a teen, and I kind of welcome any change on that for both Spike and Twilight’s character development. Twilight and Spike’s relationship has been in pretty much a rut since episode 1. You can pretty much predict their exchange depending on whether its bossy Twilight or funny neurotic Twilight in the scene.
I sincerely doubt that it was as noble as you make it out to be considering they merged the 2011 script of Magical Mystery Cure with the newer script Princess Coronation (that was the episode’s mid-production title btw) True they did change the status quo, but not shying away from something means facing the change head on. They did not do that for the sake of future episodes, only the current one. From the first few minutes of the Season Premier, Rarity simply indirectly revealed Twilight was going back to Ponyville after the Summer Sun Celebration, without ever addressing her status as princess regarding that…but that’s a discussion for another time.
As for the rumor you heard…ain’t that kind of the same thing? I mean the rumor you heard is so vague, it could mean anything, including the rumor I heard. Who knows what the deal really is…
Spike’s character journey is one of my favorites, just below RD and Scootaloo. In fact most of their character journey’s are awesome. The only character journey that has me scratching my head is Twilight’s, cause she’s only living for Celestia, not herself. What’s odd is how the show HAS confronted Twilight on this twice…Luna’s angry, doubtful gaze in the Season 3 premier, and Discord’s “you ‘totally’ deserved it” remark in the S4 premier.
This also leads back to Spike. I expected Twilight to reveal a brotherly/sisterly relationship by now, but too often he’s treated like a servent or ‘simply’ an assistant. The other 5 almost always treat Spike as an equal. I don’t really get it. Are they fully on board with Twilight’s development, or are they setting up Twilight and Celestia for a big morality fail? And is Spike going to be the focal point if that’s the case? The writers MUST be aware Spike has been on butt-monkey status for FAR too long.
Oh, I was talking about Twilight. It proved that they were willing to change something that was long-running and didn’t shy away from breaking the status quo.
Haven’t heard that rumor, more heard the rumor that the people who work at Hasbro Studios and Hasbro itself hate each other and that the people who work to coordinate efforts have a hell of a job trying.
They say his origins remain a mystery. Time will tell if they decide to age him up a little bit, or say more about his past. Or more importantly his future. He wants to be a new kind of dragon. I want to see the journey his character takes on the way to that goal, and it might involve wings.

If your talking about Luna, I agree. If your talking about Princess Twilight, that was more plot driven then character driven, like any physical change in Spike would be.
(Heh, doesn’t matter…most of the toys got her princess design wrong as well. I swear, most of the execs and toy makers haven’t even WATCHED the show. Heard rumors a lot of the toymakers are butthurt about G4 not being more like G3, so they screw up the design orders. Just a rumor, nothing more. Kind of suspicious though when they give pegasus RD G3 Rainbow Dash’s cutie mark and hat though)
Regardless, I felt that, as bad as Just for Sidekicks and Spike at your Service were…together they feel like a crossroads episodes for Spike’s natural instincts. I don’t know who Spike’s parents are, but he’s got medieval dragon instincts in his blood. His mind doesn’t know whether to become the greedy dragon or the heroic dragon that either a knight rides on or rescues her himself.
You know, other dragons made fun of him for not having them. The only other dragon without wings is the one with the comically large tail, and they probably make fun of him too.
Yeah, I saw that. Like I said, I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened. I’d say they don’t want to change the status quo with character design anymore but we all know what changed that. I indeed would like to see him grow a little bit, and have them explain it as greed not being the only thing to cause growth. Not as much as when he was greedy, just maybe a bit taller. Oh, and with wings.
They actually hinted he was going to gain wings soon when they did the recent “Hot Minute with Rarity”
Honestly, it would be nice if Spike hit a more stable puberty with wings.
Does everyone agree that while were used to Spike’s character model, if it changed to a slightly different one but well drawn(NOT THIS SHIT), we’d be allright with it?
I mean, he’s just a kid in seasons 1-4. I don’t thing we’d bug out on the change in character model…even less so then episode 2’s Princess Luna’s form. Unlike with some things, its just natural character evolution.
(even though the IDW arc cleared that up that Luna was in a depowered state when she was released from Nightmare Moon. She was essentially an alicorn as weak as Cadense or Twilight at that point, nowhere near the level of lifting Celestial Objects level.)
I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened at some point.
