It is easy to appreciate idealism, it becomes much harder to live it.

I wasn’t even attempting to be insulting, I was trying to make a statement regarding your blatant disregard for anyone who clearly doesn’t agree with your way of thinking but if you wish to see it like that, well, no skin off my bones. One of us will make it in life so to the victor go the spoils.

Okay, first of all this is a very subjective comment. Second, it’s highly irrelevant. Being an aethiest, I disagree with you. However, normally I wouldn’t care. Though since we’re on the topic, Religion has had just as numerous cases of starting war, justifying violence, prejudice, and even slavery and sacrifice and has always been a tool for people to use for invading and conquering as it has good things as you stated. Likely, even greater. Hell, one muslim guy recently decapitated his wife and bragged to the police because he said his religion ‘allowed’ it. On top of bad history, it’s only interpreted how people want. And your sister? She could be a, pardon my language, bitch out of hell but how you use her to generalize aethiests is actually extremely offensive to me. I help my community, I make people laugh, I work hard and contribute, This is really an exception to me ‘picking fights’ against someone’s religion considering i actually have a christian friend, who completely keeps his beliefs personal and is fully comprehensive to my non-belief, but i only make a point to voice opposition when one-sided, subjective and quite honestly ignorant people like you disregard the opposite perspective and ‘silently’ preach the word like this. Happiness is relative and has no religious correlation beyond ignorance and it’s bliss, religious studies are subjective, bullshit, and everybody here knows it, charity is not nearly exclusive to religious people, religion will never bring peace because peace negates the need for religion in the first place when you honestly think about it, i mean you yourself are using religion to speak out your personal thoughts or rather the fact that there are people who don’t agree with you like me, you’re welcome, so you kind of silence yourself, really. Seriously, I honestly don’t go out of my way to speak against religion most times but all you said truly offended what defines ‘my’ life, but you didn’t think about people like me, did you? And if we’re gonna argue that peace is a subjective concept the how about we just all kill each other ‘No more fighting, right?’ Peace comes in common sense and reasoning. The fact that people think we need a fucking guideline for how to not hate each other shows how much those guidelines don’t really work.

Honestly, religion hasn’t and doesn’t result in as large of a percentage of the conflicts that we’ve had in our world as some would suggest, especially compared to how many conflicts it’s prevented. Heck, Europe might’ve spent another 500 years with knights that were little more than ruling bandits and kings trying to build empires that rivaled Rome if not for Christianity. Add on top of that Islam’s effect on the Middle East, which was a heck of a lot worse than it is now before Mohammed came along, and it would take a lot more wars than religion has caused to say that it’s negatively impacted the world in that way.

That said, I don’t think that religion is needed to teach morals or ethics or to enforce them. As a religious individual myself, I practice my religion because it’s just such an inherent part of who I am (and to you neighsayers, I was raised Methodist and I am Taoist, so it has nothing to do with indoctrination). The moral guidelines set forth in my religion are ones that ring true for me, not because I need some control for a lack of conscience. There are studies that show that people that put greater emphasis on religion are actually happier than those that don’t, and I think that has more to do with religion’s purpose than moral and ethical guidelines.

I suppose, however, that since those studies also find a correlation between the importance of religion and the importance of charity work and family, you may have a point as to morals and ethics. It could also be, though, that those people are at peace with themselves and so they have that extra energy and willingness to help others and don’t find family as much of a chore as I know that some people do.

Actually, that last point brings up an interesting anecdote: My middle sister is militant atheist and, to be quite frank, she’s the only one in the family that, well… let’s just say that spending time with her can grate on everyone else’s nerves, and, naturally, that turns back on her as well. She tries to spend more time with family, but at the same time, she’s always reminded that she just can’t stop accidentally insulting people. Not all atheists do that, certainly, but it’s an interesting anecdote nonetheless.

For the record, my mom’s kind of spritual moreso than a follower of any actual religion, my youngest sister is somewhat of a deist (last I checked), my oldest sister is Christian, and I’m Taoist. And we all get along with each other, but the only reason why my mom and my youngest sister get along better with my middle sister is that they work to keep their mouths shut when she pisses them off. It’s often non-religious issues that cause the problems, too. Maybe it’s just part of that particular kind of culture that breeds militant atheists.

And I’m rambling. Point is that my view is that religion has a purpose in bringing peace to individuals, not in morals or ethics. There is some evidence that could be taken either way, and that’s the way that I take it.

Religion does start a lot of violence- but it is hardly alone there.

Honestly, religions are still somewhat useful for laying a moral groundwork within people that didn’t have any such thing previously.

We really are at the point where comprehensive ethics should start to obsolete classical mores and moral systems, and if religions could start focusing on teaching the former, I think they’d remain relevant for centuries to come.

Some people have unethical mores (regardless of their spirituality or lack thereof), though- and don’t want to let go of them, because they like the supposed justification for acting like a prick.

Then you obviously don’t understand the sane religious people, and I’m not talking about the religious fundamentalist ones, like the tarrorists in the middle-east.

Some people who’ve had personal issues, depression, or been suicidal have found peace with religion, so it actually does bring some people peace, and some religious people aren’t violent, at all, nor wage war. Just look at the Amish people, and such.

I’m a Christian, I’m not perfect, nor a saint, but I’ve never killed anyone, or started wars with anyone as far as I know.

Then that just shows how much of a damn you care about history unless it suits your purposes.

Sure, no religion debates will be started. But you know, your excuse that wars would still happen without religion is obvious to anyone. The point is that a massive number of wars were fully religious in nature though. Those are the facts. I don’t think any RECENT wars were religious though.
Though I guess the war against America by Islam could be considered another religious war. Assuming it even counts as a war. It at least proves that religion is a big cause of violence. Just not the ONLY one of course, so before you get defensive, no-one said that. Just want you to know that there’s a reason people blame religion. There are no recorded cases of it causing peace.

Crap! I debated religion!

@Beau Skunky Ah. It’s pretty cool. Main badguy wants to take over time itself (basically Ultimecia on FF8’s thing, but two decades ahead). While the series’ final minute is all “Everything is alright after all, Max creates stable time loop” the run up to it is played out like everyone that died died for real. (also implies that he’ll be a better leader this time around than in the first season finale and not get everyone there killed as well.)

@Kamazeustra I wish Wing Commander hadn’t been destroyed by that horrific crossover idea where Worf leaps through all the USA Network toons. It really showed a lot of potential to turn out the same way. Thank Chryst that Exo-Squad ended before that occurred. Best episode I recall was that Maniac and Maverick were dueling a Kilrathi ace and crashlanded on a jungle paradise planet, where they met some seemingly idealistic mad scientist hippie woman, and they all become BFFs in the course of the episode while fixing their ships, but the Kilrathi doesn’t want to run away from the war, and has to return home to sate his pride. The hippie scientist knows this, and infected him with a contagion she was studying on the planet that was lethal to Kilrathi, he was given an immunizer after she encountered him that would make him invulnerable to the virus, but able to carry and spread it to the rest of his people. When Maverick finds out he ries to convince him to return and be cured but he thinks they’re ‘trying to trick him into becoming cowards like you’ and so they wind up finishing the dogfight the episode began with. She outright states that her initial reason for research on the planet was to wipe their entire race out once and for all.

Well as I said before I’m the one to blame for the bullshit. And interesting the comic doesn’t mention capitalism, it mentions resources wich was the primary source of conflict between humans since ancient times.

Well, as stated already don’t blame Madmax for it. She didn’t write the script, it was commissioned to her.

@Niggoslav_Krawczyk
Really? I never really watched that show, but that’s pretty surprising. (And gutsy.) Yeah, I get tired of people acting like kids can’t handle anything more edgy/dark then “Teletubbies.” (In fact, I think that show would’ve freaked me out worse then all the “nightmare fuel” moments in kid movies/shows.)

In fact, I hear some kids who aren’t educated about death at an early age, grow up kinda messed-up… My sister had a friend who didn’t know what death was until she was nearly a teenager, and it messed her up so bad, she couldn’t handle hearing about death at all nearly without it upsetting her.

I still remember the finale of Mighty Max well. That show was so goofy normally, giant birdman and viking tagging along with little kid with a cap, he has random adventures, makes some friends, then decides he’s finally ready to face Skullmaster….and then everyone else freakin’ DIES. I hate that ‘parents’ think kids can’t handle death these days, especially when it happened int their time! Still, that was surprising as shit. After nobody died during the Aliens parody episode, you pretty much figured the heroes had standard Saturday Morning Plot Armour. And then the finale comes…
I wish Pirates of Dark Water would come back too. That was a great show. If the suits had trusted it, it could have been a spiritual successor of sorts to Conan the Adventurer.

Ugh, it’s sad to see a madmax comic full of hippie crap.

Suuuure humans only started fighting because of evil capitalism.
Just ignore all those dead cavemen with their skulls caved in by antelope femurs. They probably died of a Harmony overdose.
