Well, something is lying because I’ve distinctly read otherwise elsewhere.

Nope.
Honestly, I think the writers just used the line for its alliterative value and the fact that horses were/are commonly used as a measure of strength in real life, not to imply that “horses” in Equestria are a different animal from ponies. Especially considering the shadow the CMCs cast is in the shape of a standard stallion-pony model.
Looks like a Clydesdale.
The mouse-horses were shaped distinctively, too. Here, the head design looks a bit rugged, but that does favor Dr. Whooves now that I think about it. The show’s fairly unclear about the role of horses versus ponies, though.
Kind of looks like the silhouette of a normal stallion to me. The Saddle Arabia horses were taller and more lithe looking.
What? I’m not the only one to thing of that song during this bit, right?
