But it works so well with the very phyicall aspects of both the PC’s and the enimeis. Thoghe to over all diffanculty nosed dived for a long time. OoE took a step in right direction mixing side scrolling beat em style stages with metroidvania castle at the end.

Along with some of the best boss fights in the series. I really wish Iga had been able to continue with the main stream games as it looked like his team was on the verge of a long over due evolution for the series. (that I want my 1999 game dammit)

Yeah, I like the RPG elements, (like HP & items) in Castlevania. They seem to work well in that series, and it’s kinda interesting to have enemies & such have stats in an action game series, and such.

Ya the early days of metroidvania were not pretty. But each series came up with to make work over time.

Metroid refined it base game play and turned it to an art in way. Heck even showing everyone how to translate the formula into an fps and make it work.

Castlevania went on to add rpg elements into the mix. A brilliant move given the over all setting. Along with a very detailed and connected story(YMMV on that). Though many of there 3d ventures have been hit and miss.(I with hold judgement on LoS as we don’t need a cox vs iga fight here) They did come up some really fun game play gimmicks that made the different characters all feel unique in some way. Even if the castle felt the same after the 10th time.

Perhaps, but if you ask me, the first Metroid was kinda guilty of that to. (I love that game, don’t get me wrong.) I got confused by some areas, because they looked so much alike, (They had to reuse some rooms to save data.) I didn’t know if I was progressing backwards at times in Norfair especially. I also didn’t know if I was supposet to go after Kraid, or Ridley first. (Kraid’s pretty hard without the wave beam, which you have to get from Norfair.)
I’ve had to backtrack pretty far in Metroid to, because of stuff like that. (Like one time I forgot to get the long beam.) It takes a long time to play to.

Not to mention going into the final area without the ice beam, there’s no in-game instruction, or hint you had to get the ice beam, and get rid of your wave beam in order to defeat the Metroids. I only knew about that already, because I played “Super Metroid” before the first one, where that was easier to figure out by yourself, sense that game allowed you to keep, and switch between beams.)

I like the original Metroid, don’t get me wrong, but IMO it didn’t age as well as “Super Metroid,” or even “Metroid 2” for Gameboy, which also felt more advanced to me.
(After playing those games, it was really annoying that you couldn’t duck to shoot smaller enemies in the first Metroid.)

True. But Simon’s Quest really suffered because of it’s drawbacks. Not to say it was a bad game. But I think they tried just little too hard with the padding. Heck in metroid if you missed the morph ball it was only like a few rooms later the player would inconter a puzzle that needed it and the player would go back.

Simon’s Quest however had about 3 villages, 2 forest and a broken bridge before you got to the mansion that required the white gem from the first village. And if you didn’t have it you could try to clear it but unless you knew the exact positions and movements of a bunch of unseeable platforms then you were sunk.

So you would have to backtrack to the first village witch could take any where from 45mins to and hour and a half depending on wither or not you were will to move at night. Buy that gem and make the long hall back to the mansion. About 3 hours of padding. That is Simon’s Quest’s biggest failing if you ask me.

Yeah, though that’s kinda of a flaw of other “Metroidvania”-style games. Admittedly it wasn’t as fleshed-out as later games. Some parts of the game you might need a walkthrough for just to know where to go next.

I think the “Metroidvania” genre is probably one of my favorite game genres personally. Some pretty good underrated games in that genre include Goonies 2, Tails’ Adventure, and Shantae.

Platforming is easier yes. But the lack of any kind of direction really hurt the game. I mean if you didn’t the white gem in first village and got all the way to the mansion you would have to back track all the way back to the first village.

I heard that to, but I’m not sure if it’s true. I heard some of the NPCs were liars, and some were telling the truth.

One good thing about CV2: Simon’s Quest is it’s actually not as incredibly hard as most Castlevania games. (In terms of fighting enemies/platforming.) I still haven’t beaten CV3 to this day.

I must add, this fanart is based on the first CV game’s boxart.

Simon’s quest is a love it or hate it kinda game. It nice in that it was experiment in a different game play style for the series. But the bad translation, lack of clear direction, and a little less polish then first games real held it back.

If any one is interested there are quite a few good fan hack/games of it out there. Google Simon’s quest Revamped.A 16-bit style remake with minor leveling system added or Dracula’s Shadow. A DOS 8-bit total remake that adds several new features including a new map,3 playable charterers(Aulcard,Simon,Sonia belamont though there renamed due to copyright) and item crashes.

I actually liked Castlevania 2, the only problem it suffered from it was the (badly translated) hints for some of the puzzles were a bit off… Still it’s not as bad as some say it was, in fact it helped inspired the whole “Metroidvania” genre of games, (which are sidescrollers focused on exploration, and RPG elements like using items) and the later Castlevania games. So it helped create a new game genre.

In fact, I liked “Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link,” even though it’s kinda hated to. (Though, it had better hints from NPCs, and you didn’t have to tediously find hidden dungeons like the first Zelda.)

Ironically, I hear the AVGN actually doesn’t hate CV2 as much as he acted like in his review. Still, I think it is lame of people to hate games based on his reviews… My friends made fun of me for liking the first NES TMNT game (not the one based on the arcade) thanks to the AVGN who convinced everyone to hate that game to. (It’s actually not a bad game either, just hard like alot of other NES games were. Frankly, I thought Megaman was harder.)

You flat-out said he’s a try hard narcissist and people who agree with his review based on the review are 15 year olds. There is no interpenetration possible.
