the amazing spider man 300 comic cover
That question would be interesting in the series was better written, but Otto’s being “Better” than Peter comes off more as just poor writing. It’s not that he’s doing having more success, it’s more that he’s not having the universe inexplicably dump on him the way Peter constantly did (killing a super-villain on live TV would have landed Peter Parker on death row, not giving him mass adoration).
Plus… Y’know, there’s the fact that his tenure as Spider-Man came by murdering Peter Parker and wearing his corpse.
See THAT’S the kinda criticism I like to hear when it comes to SS. Smart ones.
I disagree; I’ve found the book to have problems independent of the premise. Various characters are written wildly out of character (including Jameson, one of my favorites), and the entire story is structured in an awkward manner that keeps Otto from getting egg on his face. In spite of putting no effort into impersonating Peter’s personality, nobody’s noticed the change.
What’s more, the premise has more problems than simply not having Peter in the main role; When you have a hero who’s such a bastard, who cares if he wins? It’s like watching Stalin and Hitler in a deathmatch; you can’t really root for either of them, you just want to shoot them both.
it’s basically law in Marvel Peter’s not allowed to be happy
“Oh, Spike, that’s just a silly dream. Go back to sleep.”
But what will he sell to him, his love for Aunt May? (Yes, I remember THAT old ‘Ock loves May [for her inherited nuclear reactor]’ plot). And oh man… Ock-as-Pete hasn’t been having romantic thoughts about her, has he? because if so, then Ewwww!
Spiderman always gets the short stick.
Maybe Octavius will make a deal with Mephisto.
And the best part about your idea is, they could just pull it out in a few years when, after this mess ends, they come up with yet ANOTHER way to degrade the character. (Hey, anyone remember the Clone Saga?)
That’s a hell of a fiftieth anniversary special.
“Spider-Man’s dead and replaced by his genocidal enemy! And everyone in the Marvel universe likes Doc Ock Spidey better!”
I think a more appropriate cover for this comic would’ve been a shot of Peter getting pissed on.
Yes.
