So it would have to be a pretty big overhaul mod then, but knowing how this fandom is, someone will find a way somehow.

I’d be surprised if there wasn’t. However, the mod would have to be pretty involved. The voices will likely be different, the fighting styles will likely be different, and the powers/skills they use will also likely be different.
 
That is to say, the (hypothetical) orange deer with a cowboy hat may not use a lasso or have overwhelming bucking attacks, or the light blue bovine may not be an speedy, aerial specialist. That would make the transitions a bit different, because the modded purple moose or pink gazelle may not “feel” like Twilight Sparkle or Pinkie Pie.
 
(From the looks of the art those, I don’t think the characters will have any even parodied connection to the FiM Mane 6. So you’ll probably have to take the finished version of the magical reindeer Lauren Faust created and figure out with pony best fits it.)

Plus, wouldn’t there a decent chance that someone would end up creating a pony mod to try and alter it to look like the original?

According to Mane6 and what I’ve read previously, the game will have entirely new, quadrupedal characters (designed by Lauren Faust), but it will still be a completely different fighting game (to my knowledge), because I can’t think of any other fighting game that doesn’t have bipeds. And going from the art I’ve seen, it looks like the characters will be just as well-designed as the FiM characters.
 
The issue is: It ain’t pony.
 
However, Mane6 got plenty of press from EVO (big fighting game convention thing), so those in the know are aware of what happened with Mane6 and they know that Mane6 is looking to produce something else.
 
So even though they may not get too much attention from the brony community, they very well may get unique acclaim from the fighting game community due to skill and fighting with cute, artistic characters in what will likely be a more-than-sound fighting system.

The team making it got a notice from Hasbro saying basically “Stop it or we’ll sue,” so they stopped. So I’m not sure what this is about right here.

why is this still a thing? were things released, or do people keep making their own versions, or do people just not want to leave the game as it was alone, or… what? I’m confused.
