I think they are the first line of deffense so the Princesses don’t have to fight every last minor threat that bothers the castle. Luna and Celestia would be like the reserve secret weapons.
implying the guards actualy guard them at any point, its pretty much universaly accepted they’re there to keep up appearances, if the princesses can’t stop something the guards arn’t gonna be any use
Also the the first training they will probably under go will involve the potty.
