I pretty much agree with this, except I do think the animation was pretty good. Not enough to lift the movie out of mediocrity, but not “Johnny Test” levels, like some critics keep saying.
If it were an episode of the series, I’d rank it among the weakest so far.
This. The limited theatrical run would’ve been worth it for the publicity alone even if ticket sales had fallen to Delgo levels. The fact that ticket sales were actually pretty good was just gravy, as far as Hasbro is concerned.
Wherever they made their money from, I’m a bit titchy at the quality of the production. I’ve said it a thousand times and I’ll say it again - if Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Lab can churn out awesome 70 minute specials, why can’t DHX perform just as well?
The only thing I’m willing to give the movie is that Twilight and Spike’s relationship was highlighted and addressed in a very good manner - their dynamic, the co-dependence, everything. Plot-wise, art direction, etcetera? Not even close to being a click.
Remember how limited a run this was? This was a DTV production from the start and taking advantage of some theatrical production. Box office takings don’t mean too much for something liek this.
Last I checked the box office numbers were pretty mediocre - I think it just about broke even, although it arguably had a limited release which might have hampered it. Personally, though, I kind of expected a “Mask of Phantasm for Girls” level of story and planning.
Not… what we got. I mean, come on! If Ego Trip could turn a boy’s cartoon into a decent 70 minute cool-fest with a healthy subversion of cliches and good old comedy and action, why couldn’t DHX do it with EQG? Standards are kinda universal.
For all purposes, EQG was a financial success to Hasbro.

Rainbow Rocks might not be a movie at all. It might be a Japanese-produced anime television series that builds off on Equestria Girls.
sigh fine. Let me put this in simple enough terms that you’ll understand:
Just because there are ponies in the first and last beginning few minutes, just because there is a take-over-the-world plot (which is itself completely ignored and only brought up in the five minute confrontation at the conclusion) and just because sunset turns into an anthrocon reject in said conclusion doesn’t automatically mean anything.
It just means the beginning ending is non-standard: The rest of it is generic cliched high school drama crap played to a capital C.
Do I need to explain how ignoring plot elements does not support your argument?

I realized this after I made the comment, but it still doesn’t stop it from being incredibly dumb.
That because it contains a bullshit ending with a “demon” that looks like it was ripped out of a furcon convention it somehow means that EQG is not a cliched high school drama?

Okay, whoever is on the concept team for this must be incredibly influenced by speed. That or this is flat out trolling unless it’s been confirmed, then I’ll begin the ‘Denial’ Stage of the cycle.
