There’s a mistake in the earlier post: What was meant is .084 Low Es, not 0.84s which would be approximately ten times bigger.

Fender used a smaller bridge for the Pawn Shop ones;

I’ve played the instrument as a guitar that’s tuned an octave lower such as playing “Corona” by the Minutemen (Known as “The Jackass song,”) and “Walk, Don’t Run” as played by The Ventures and as a baritone guitar in A and B by using a capo, And have played basslines similar to those in XTC and The Dukes Of Stratosphear (Same band, Using a Pseudonym) songs. XTC were a British band.

Also due to the short scale there’s less string tension so it can be easier on the fingers and can be played fast. I’ve played the fast bass part to The New Pornographers’ “Use It” with my fingers rather than a pick on it.

I guess the question is that was it a QA problem? Or just a choice in stings where you were getting bad intonation?

What styles do you play? I would like see how this guitar in particular can be applied with said versatility.

It seems almost like a blend of baritone guitar and a standard bass.

I happen to believe(whether it’s true or not) that the Thumb has far limited appeal because of its one of a kind tone. I grew up a lot on jazz, funk, R&B, but started adopting more rock and metal as I got older so I can see how the Thumb is used.

I looked on YT and found video demonstrations of both the Warwick and the Bass VI.

Warwick:

I can see it does have appeal, But it’s not quite my cup of tea for some reason or reasons.

There’s a demonstration video of a pawn Shop Bass VI here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H415_ckxwm4

The man who demonstrated it made a mistake though, They’re not Mustang-style pickups.

Also these basses were shipped with 0.84 Low E strings, And when I got mine it was so floppy I could scarcely keep it in tune let alone intonate it.

Fender also made a mistake with the bridge, It’s too small to intonate the lower strings since I replaced the stock ones with the 26-95s so now I need a bigger bridge, maybe a Staytrem bridge, In order to intonate them.

With that said, I do like the instrument and exploring the tones it can produce depending on what I do - Picking over one pickup or another, Over the neck, With different pickups and different amp settings, Etc. The neck is comfortable for me too and I also like playing chords on it.

Although I really like Fender, I actually prefer Warwick basses, my Dad had one, a early 00s Thumb 5. It sounded sweet and recently I played a Corvette Std; I’ll do everything in my power to get both.

I forgot that existed. The Bass VI has an interesting tone compared to the more popular Fenders. Proabably not on my shortlist but I’d take a change to play on it. I don’t think I’ve seen one at any of my local music shops.

Also YT Link?

Now that I’ve started talking about it I realized how much I’m interested in basses instead of guitars. I also like the idea of an 8-string bass, The type that’s like a 12-string guitar with octave strings.

Here’s a photo of a Mosrite Bass VI Prototype (Never gone into production):

Also works as a baritone guitar. These have skinny necks and I haven’t played a Mosrite bass, But I have played two of the guitars and the bridges are very easy to palm mute on and the pickups are very hot.

I like how Fender basses sound. Come to think of it I think I’m more open to different basses (And Baritones) than I am to guitars. Anyone here into the Bass VI? I have a Fender Pawn Shop one, And out of the box I put the heavier La Bella 26-95s on it and it won’t intonate with the stock bridge so now I have to go get a new bridge. Otherwise, It’s a versatile instrument.

Also I saw a video on YT of Jurg Maag playing a bass with two Bass, And two Bass Octave strings on it as a hybrid bass/guitar. I think that’s interesting, And perhaps I should get into bass guitars more than regular guitars. I have too many guitars, I never play them all and not all of them even inspire me.
