I think they’ve had a few background scenes together. Essentially started in season 1 as a random “ponies standing next to each other” sort of thing, but more and more often the Doctor was sighted with or near Derpy. From there, it went from “friends with” to “companions” to “love interest” within a relatively short space of time.
Anyway I now ship Doctor/Roseluck 110%
…and I always thought Doctor/Roseluck was better than Doctor/Derpy anyway.
I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the reason. Derpy’s likened to other companions (I know a girl who’s dead convinced that she’s Donna) but the real reason, the true reason was that they were two of the top most popular BG ponies. Plus I imagine it let female fans project wanting to f#ck David Tennant onto our lil favourite. ;)
Back then, people shipped Doctor Whooves and Derpy because they noticed Derpy was somehow similar to Rose. (Blonde, clumsy, stuck on a crappy job until the Doctor came and changed her life, etc.)
Doctor Hooves and Roseluck could have been a thing if they had done it 4 years ago.
For Doctor Whooves and Derpy Hooves, it’s because their names are similar. Yup, it’s that simple.
In the case of Octy and Vinyl, it was because of a couple popular fanfics, and then it spread like wildfire.
