That system or pattern is always a very loose one, look at Doctor Who.  
Over 50 years and almost all things with the name on it is in canon, over half of it not even of the the same system or pattern like you seem to think.  
As NonAnon said, canon is different from continuity, and even then some things are not that clear cut, like the line in the TV movie of the Doctor being half human, it’s not in continuity or canon but the rest of the movie is.

In those cases, the writers generally at least follow a system or pattern already set by the original writers.
 
The comics do not do that, and also don’t even ATTEMPT to make sense in-universe. Luna’s t-shirts for example make literally zero sense.

Ummm… That’s irrelevant, because I’m using canonical correctly. The comics aren’t written by anyone at all connected to the MLP: FiM team, thus it can’t be claimed to be canonical with how little it even TRIES to connect to the show.
