While I think that those two background ponies overreacted (I decided to stop defending them after one of them made a baseless accusation towards Obsessive Rarity Fan because he didn’t agree with their viewpoint), it probably was pretty smart of you to request that the guard alter his costume. You know, to avoid future problems like this.

It didn’t. Regardless, my point was more that people whom are government employees shouldn’t be assholes to the people whom pay their salaries. So what if someone is wearing a costume that has a ribbon band (or whatever the hell that is called) one it? I don’t see people getting upset at Bruce Willis for doing the same in The Siege (great movie btw), so why the arbitrary difference?

I mean, while I think ORF doesn’t seem to understand why it’s (unintentionally; let’s not forget that this cosplayer never intended to offend anyone, which is evident in the way he graciously agreed to alter the outfit once he was informed) disrespectful, ORF has a point. Any way you slice it, war is hell. At the same time, while he has a point about freedom of expression (which, I’d like to point out, is one of the many freedoms that soldiers in our country fight for), that doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want. If you end up offending someone due to the way you express yourself, you have to be prepared to face consequences.

Obessive Rarity Fan no veteran would ever say what you just fucking said. And if you were in the army you sound like a POG who does not know the meaning of war and was probably discharged dishonorable for disgraceful actions. You make me sick

@ArrJaySketch Altho I can’t agree with it I do see where some of the ire comes from. It A: ruins the lore because these aren’t equestrian-specific medals and B: it looks far and away better when a cosplay actually utilises medals for their intended purpose (for instance, the same set of ribbons wouldn’t be out of place on a Boss/Big Boss cosplay duo, or on reenactors) It’s kinda situational that way.

His stance is some unholy trinity of carry sword, parade rest, and the position of attention. Each part looks good. Feet are angled too far.

Oh I understand what it’s supposed to represent being an Army veteran myself, only I choose to reject it. Medals and ribbons are nothing but worthless trinkets meant to convince one that their sacrifices, deaths of friends and comrades, lost limbs and shattered minds, killing and destruction, that it has some noble and honorable purpose; all while the politicians and war profiteers reap the benefits of their geopolitical chess match. Some soldiers may find them to be a point of pride, but for me it is nothing but an utter travesty of what war truly entails.
 
And since everyone who spoke out earlier was using their service/veterans status as top credentials for criticizing the gentleman’s cosplay, I use mine to give a belated full endorsement of his fantasy uniform. Among other reasons to serve in the military is to preserve and protect American “values”, of which Freedom of Expression is among the most highly esteemed.

To be fair, to anyone not familiar with military ribbons, it’d be hard to identify them from the picture right here, so it’s understandable that some people would not understand the significance. But yeah, you’ve got a point. I don’t think there was any need for you to shout the first time, though.

Obsessive rarity fan 2 of the ribbons are the purple heart and combat action ribbon. Only earned through trauma of mind and body and even death. even if he wasn’t pretending to be military wearing them for this purpose is an insult to anyone who has earned them. Those are just 2 of the combat oriented ribbons he is wearing. The cosplayer of celestia as been very gracious in her apologies. You may not understand what the ribbons mean to us who serve but I hope you can understand that it is important to our military culture even if it is not understandable to you

DON’T let the self-righteous indignation of those Background Ponies ruin your friend’s fabulous cosplay! For one, nobody would mistake his outfit for a real military uniform, let alone one of the Marines or any other US Military branch. If he was actually pretending to be a Real Life service member to mooch off the “glory”, then yes that would be disrespectful, but he obviously isn’t and only intended to make a cool costume and have fun at conventions. Besides, if they really did care for the values for which they served, they would respect your friend’s right to express himself.
 
I say this all as a former service member and veteran myself, and am quite frankly disgusted with the behavior of those Background Ponies before me.
