Interestingly enough, “thou” was actually less formal than “you,” sort of similar to vous/tu en francais. So, when Luna was referring to the common folk as “thou,” she was actually trying to be friendly.

This is pretty much what I think was more likely concerning Luna’s visit then what some people claim was Celestia pulling a prank. In my headcannon though she was not paying attention when Celestia was telling her how much things had changed.
