Yeah, I love Whimsey Weatherbe’s redesign, in both look, and personality in this. This version of her would be at home in the actual show.
Plus I like seeing old characters get brought back in new canons personally. (I was quite happy with how they handled remaking Tirek in the new show.)
Oh, the concept definitely is. Good enough to be on the show, even. Whimsey’s personality and design by Karzahnii is Faust-level stuff.
I liked “Dragon Quest,” but the dragon empress seems like a “forced villain” to me, if that makes any sense.
@Vree
Yeah, as you said, while “bad leaders” exist, as a represenative of her species, it doesn’t seem like she’d be the kind to negociate with other species, or anything really with her attitudes… Not to mention threatening to genocide an entire town, if her demands aren’t met, and sociopathically state it makes no difference to her, and act like there’d be no reprocussions.
(I imagine Celestia, a princess known to fight “eldrich abominations,” wouldn’t take kindly to harm coming to her little ponies.)
I hate to “put down,” sense I love this artist’s works, it’s just the dragon empress feels very “forced,” the rest of the fan-comic is nice though.
Somebody told me this comic was “better” then the IDW official series, but honestly, I’d have to disagree. (No offense to said artist, who’s very good otherwise.)
I agree, that’s my only sour point in this story so far as well.
I kinda feel like after an amazing start Karzahnii kiinda lost the story after the 8th page or so.
I’d probably have made the Empress a bit less homicidal, or substitute her with another dragon to act as the queen’s agent (and if HE is a violent douchebag - who maybe gets reprimanded for it by the empress later - that’s fine from a story standpoint. But I can’t imagine a Celestia-level ruler being as bipolar as this.)
The red dragon from Dragonshy was pretty cool. He was just chilling in his new home being ignorant to the ponies. Even when they kicked him in the face he just blew smoke on them.
I dunno, I usually like this artist’s art, but here I feel they tried to do something a little too ‘epic’ and it ends up being a little ‘meh’. Doesn’t really help they chose to base their story off of arguably one of the worst episodes of the series.

Huge dragons like that just don’t care for small ponies. You undoubtedly consider yourself to the short-lived, simple-minded mice running around your floor, and if one took something you wanted, you wouldn’t hesitate using violence to take it back. Regardless of the truth of the matter, that’s how the dragoness views ponykind, as their ego and pride won’t allow them to see them as equals. Spike and Whimsey would be the exceptions, as they’ve started out young treating ponies as equals.
Doesn’t take much to make her homicidal, does it? Especially, torwards a small creature that’s hardly even a threat to it.
I don’t know, I like the art, and characterization/redesign for Whimsey, but I don’t think Karzahnii did a good job on the Dragon empress’s personality in this.
One moment she seems reasonable/calm, the next a total evil unredeemable monster. Granted she’s a dragon, and all the “big” dragons we’ve seen in the show, haven’t been very nice, but still… Something about it bugs me.
T’is not an answer! T’is but a question! And thy answer is yea, verily!
And I had to have butchered that something fierce.
Also, this story is a parallel to “Dragon Quest”, so “Power ponies” and “Bats!” haven’t happened yet.
Indeed.
………… umm dude, all she had was fangs and bat sens as flutterbat.
flutterhulk was just because she was playing a character with those abiltiies.
the stare is a legitimate aiblity of her’s, the lion hearted will within breaking loose.
We’ll see…
