If this was just the Tumblrsphere, that would be fine. If it was just the Internet, I’d still call myself a Feminist.

It’s the College Campus bit that concerns the fuck outta me. This crap is being injected straight into the brains of an entire generation of potential activists of all kinds. In short, this threatens to become mainstream behavior of all Activism, not just feminism, as opposed to a fringe thing as it now.

For now, I hesitate to fully throw my lot into any social movement until they get their shit together.

So, you’re saying I’m not allowed to distance myself from something in order to actually be taken seriously? Because, due to how badly it has been stained, it is far more difficult to speak as a “feminist” than it is as an egalitarian, or simply as someone who supports gender equality.

It’s like you would expect families to continue to spend time at an amusement park after finding it riddled with trash and unsanitary conditions, instead of leaving in the hopes that someday it might become clean enough again to visit.

Meanwhile, I AM specifically addressing the people that are the PROBLEM. Weeding a garden takes a lot of time.

It’s called an “analogy.” There are plenty of Christians who actively stand against what Christianity really is about, compassion and forgiveness towards fellow human beings. Age has little to do with it when it’s a very similar circumstance.

If you bothered to look beyond the Tumblrsphere and college campuses, you’ll find that feminism gets a lot more level-headed. The people you’re complaining about are the people who don’t yet have much experience with the real world and thus are a lot more politically naive. But as people get older, they also get wiser.

Instead of simply dismissing the movement as a whole, why not speak out against the extremists specifically? No good will come out of dismissing the good along with the bad.

You literally just tried comparing a religion thousands of years old that has a history wrought with turmoil across all continents, over which there is literally a death count in the millions, to a political movement that’s a couple of hundred years old.

Really.

You really just did that.

Since I don’t want to write a huge wall of text, I’ll just give you this:

If you were part of a group that was openly spreading lies, and engaging in behavior that only served to HURT everything they claim to stand for, wouldn’t you reconsider your part in it? I’d rather wear a nice, clean pair of pants, as opposed to a pair that’s been shat in to the point where terms like “feminazi” even came into existence in the first place.

I believe in gender equality.

Today’s “feminism” does NOT.

I’m a Christian, but you certainly don’t see me stop calling myself one because of the assholes and homophobes who use Christianity to support their bigotry.

Hell, if you really wanted to, you could cherry-pick the worst cases of the brony fandom and use it to claim that bronies are awful.

The problem is, the term “feminist” has a negative stigma because of the kind of people that practice it on places like Tumblr.

I used to consider myself a feminist before Tumblr, but I want nothing to do with that word now.

No one really hates gender equality, because there’s no reason to. Feminism, on the other hand? A lot of reasons to hate that.

I’m confused.

We already have Kassarc being an idiot. So shouldn’t Tex already be here so he can be an idiot for polar oppisite reasons (Horseshoe theory FTW)?

it’s interesting because that was one of the thing’s faust was trying to do when she made mlp. try and treat the source of the problem. from what i understand she wanted to make role model female characters that would set a precedent for the new generation of young girls. that they could be the the “book worm”, “farm hand”, “athlete”, “care giver”, “party animal” and even the “diva”, and that it was ok and not socially outlandish.

well it comes down to what wave of feminism you’re referring to. 1st was “we want to vote and be treated like people” 2nd was “we are valuable members of society that can contribute in the same way as any one else” third “we have tits and men do not “ 4th wave is the sjw and they are dumb asses. 4th wave should have been “we are valuable members of society and do not need special support or privileges, also… we have tits”

Well, yes, because in practice that’s usually what feminism is. Equal rights for women. People pay attention more towards the crazy ones because they’re the ones who are the loudest.

Kind of like bronies.

That’s exactly what the problem is. Lawmakers were afraid to challenge the last remnants of a harmful attitude because they wrongly believed it wasn’t their business to do so.

This is a common trend among social issues: there will always be people who refuse to address them because they believe it to be none of their business. The more they try to avoid it, however, the more apparent it becomes that they can’t.

For the same reason it says on wikipedia:

The original justifications for the legal non-criminalization of marital rape were simply the result of the way marriage was understood historically in most cultures (legally requiring a wife to obey her husband, allowing a husband to punish his wife if she did not perform her duties etc.). However, long after these views were no longer considered valid in Western countries, the lawmakers have continued to be reluctant to intervene on the issue of rape in marriage, based on the idea that it was undesirable to interfere with the ‘privacy’ of a married couple and that marriage as an institution had to be ‘protected’ from outside intervention.
