Lunar Supporter - Helped forge New Lunar Republic's freedom in the face of the Solar Empire's oppressive tyrannical regime (April Fools 2023).
The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@The Smiling Pony
Add to that the fact that even adoult, don’t allways want to run across this kind of content. After all NSFW means “Not Safe For Work” it started as a worning for content that people are better watch in the privacy of their home and not in public.

I’m sure that I am far from the only user in this site that have a differnt filter for viewing DB in public than when I view it at home. Same thing can go for google safe search, depending of the search topic.

There’s nothing wrong with to trying to help keep parents informed. We’re talking about a commercial IP meant for kids here, not making sure the evening news doesn’t have mean words in it.

IMO children should always be supervised when on the net, but 100% coverage is hardly a realistic expectation. I’d rather let parents know about internet filters and which sites they may want to filter than have their 5yo kid wander into Cuteosphere’s gore-porn gallery or something.

Nothing this Tumblr’s doing is aimed at removing content or making it harder for adults to get to, just making sure NSFW stuff is marked as NSFW.

Well hey, you have to admit that their goal of sharing tools and knowledge for internet safety and ultimately leaving it up to the parents themselves to manage their kid’s internet (and thus requiring them to do actual parenting) is a nobler, more realistic, and much less intrusive goal than that of the wackos who try to keep kids safe by attempting to “purify” the internet of objectionable content (I.E. censor the hell out of everything).

The thing is, you can’t make the internet “safe” for kids. It’s literally impossible. Especially nowadays, when just searching for a word you never heard before can bring up links to Redtube (I once saw someone describe a deformed carrot someone was trying to sell on Craigslist as looking “like a sybian”, honestly didn’t know what that word meant, and in the first links I got when I googled it, BOOM. Redtube).

Then, there’s the fact that it’s incredibly easy to also find pictures of horrifying gore, and pretty much any other awful thing you can imagine.

Besides that, kids aren’t as stupid as we think. Do these people think that kids aren’t going to look for “naughty” things once no one’s looking over their shoulder?? Are they SERIOUS??

People are too goddamn preoccupied with over-sheltering children to the point where we get these brainless teenagers that get offended by goddamn EVERYTHING, because their parents molly-coddled the hell out of ’em, and kept them from experiencing LIFE.

Wow, this is… actually really even-handed and reasonable. They things they suggest are logical and intelligent, and they explain them in a courteous manner. What a breath of fresh air!

Derpibooru has loads of things that I sure as hell wouldn’t want my kids to see. Even with filters, there are tons of bullshit political and social arguments in the comments, many of which are quite vulgar.

Plus there’s the forums, which are chock-full of all kinds of NSFW stuff that any kid can simply click on and see.

@Minus
The main reason Derpibooru isn’t fitting to kids is the comments. And to be honestm we are better off as a “kid unfriendly site”, otherwhise the moderators would have to police the forums and comment sections much more harshly.

The filters themselves are not necesseraly here for kids either. (and let’s be honest, kids will have no problem to disable them - you don’t even need to make an abcount to switch filters.)

It's bad. In a good way!
Thought these guys were cool for a moment, but labeling Derpibooru as a porn site?!

My little sister is MUCH safer searching for images on here than she on Google’s image search! There is no justification for that kind of misinformation. Also I’d like to think that monitoring your kids is common sense, but maybe some parents think pony sites are actually all kid-friendly. So I am not against these guys, but they need to be a bit more sensible if they want my respect.

Derpibooru does have loads of smut, and even though most of it isn’t, there are so many goddamn arguments here in the comments and so many vulgar image macros that it’s probably better to not let your child visit this site at all.

@Playah
If they’re young enough that I’d want to monitor their internet behavior, I wouldn’t let them on any brony sites. There’s too many bronies who are absolute assholes and too many bronies who feel obligated to disregard any requests to keep things child-friendly.

Well, I’d let them view Egophiliac’s pony-related tumblr comics, and Twily Daily; those seem sincere about staying child-friendly.

@The Smiling Pony
Seriously, I think you mods do about as good a job on this site as could be expected, and the filtering system is flexible and robust. But it still relies on people tagging things correctly and knowing how to tag things correctly. And, of course, people tend to run a bit wild in the comments. The closest I’d get to letting a child browse this site is doing a search for them, then saving off the images that are suitable and letting them view the images offline.

No, I read it. And I still don’t see what the issue is.

Saying this is a “condescending lecture” is not in any a valid argument. It does nothing to address the actual points of issue the letter raises, or why you might disagree with them.

This is just my personal impression, but to me it seems like you’re saying that it’s a “condescending lecture” as a way of simply dismissing the issue because you don’t want to give it any thought.

If you’re going to respond to something, try reading it first. Oh wait, that’d get in the way of delivering yet another condescending lecture about not badmouthing condescending lectures.

How? Literally the only thing this is asking is to help provide information on how to create a safe, friendly community.

Like, seriously, how can this be considered a personal attack? Explain it to me, because I’m not getting it. Is trying to help people create a better community really such a bad thing now?

Hell, the entire tone of this letter entirely friendly and reasonable. It’s being very polite and is not trying to force its demands on anyone. What is even the issue here?

@Niggoslav_Krawczyk

“Free speech” means that the government cannot punish you for your actions. Nothing more, nothing less.

Free speech does not protect you from the consequences of what you say. Just as you are free to say something, people are free to call you out on it.

If you see someone trying to bully someone off the internet, that is not taking away someone’s free speech. It’s an asshole thing to do, but it is not an issue of free speech.

That would be a valid argument if more than just a token handful of these “constructive criticisms” were phrased as something other than a personal attack or a condescending lecture. Text in the OP is the latter, BTW, as is pretty much everything you say.

I’m not even talking about a “siege,” I’m talking about people giving constructive advice on how to improve the community.

But no, you literally cannot say, “hey guys, this is kind of an asshole thing to do, we really shouldn’t do it” without a bunch of assholes citing “free speech!” as if they knew what that actually meant.
