I prefer the Heartstrings interpretation of them helping save the day in small ways, offscreen.

That was a plot point in the Twilight Sparkle micro comic, actually. A pony who wanted to go incognito altered her cutie mark so no one would recognize her.
They are Observers. All things to be laid to rest in Equestria’s history must be Observed, because only under their careful gaze can things truly Happen. If Lyra and Bon-Bon did not Observe it, no one can say for certain that it Happened. All things must bear scrutiny by their gaze.
Makes me wonder if falsifying your cutie mark is a Thing in equestria…like maybe there’s a black market for fake ids and coat dyes and forged butt tattoos.

And I love how Twi is actually looking at his panel.
I’m going to say a piece of alexandrite. It changes color depending on the viewing angle. Plus, a talent for deception would hardly be useful if one’s mark had a straightforward interpretation.
