The whole Christianity is based on Jesus forgiving humanity on the cross.  
Which only happened because Judas betrayed him.  
Which makes Judas a hero.  
And Discord is the Judas of Equestria.  
…and Twilight is the Jesus of Equestria…

Pretty sure he openly said that he was only helping Equestria because of Fluttershy.
 
Although I think he knew what he was doing all along for the most part. He pointed out to Twilight what she needed to look for for the keys. He was probably cozying up to Tirek because he knew what the final key was, and what needed to be done to activate it (betray Twilight and friends and see if she has the ability to forgive him).

He planned it out all along. He knew Twilight needer her key so he pretended to go bad and subsequently be “reformed” so that he could grant her the key she needed. Remember, he was the one who first pointed out the existence of the keys in the first place by bookmarking the journal and pushing Twilight to figure it all out.

Actually, no. He was a dangerous felon who was behaving himself out of a desire to have friends. The Elements of Harmony got put away at the start of the season, and when Discord openly muses about this, Fluttershy responds by pointing out to him that he’s behaving himself for the sake of their friendship. Discord responds by shrinking himself, pulling a sight gag to demonstrate that she’s just “cut him down to size” with the truth. He was then “good”, for moderate values of good, all season despite the absence of the elements. It wasn’t until Tirek made him feel like he’d become a total wuss and sold himself out that he even thought about seriously becoming a bad guy again.

Because who can stay mad at that face? D’awwww!
 
Also, it’s not like nopony saw it coming. You’re pretty much an occupational hazard by now more than an active antagonist.

The reason Discord was forgiven is because all shows need a happy ending.

@Conred Yanno, that might be interesting to explore. Ponies didn’t really give a hoot about him before outside of being some spoooooooky ancient spirit, but now that he went and actively betrayed them all, he might not feel so welcome in Ponyville anymore!

On another note, what would the ponies have to gain from not forgiving Discord, it would have been quite depressing to watch them put him away and then say something like “some people are just always going to be jerks”.
 
Its a much more positive note to just forgive him as illogical as it seems.

Im more bothered by the fact that he didnt felt any remorse to those ponies he hurt, he only appreciate the friendship of mane6 and learn a bit about LOYALTY element of friendship. He still have no conscious and he is egoistical,narcisstic and cynical and most of the Equestria dont know that he is good now so there will be probably some episodes about him being “unfamous”
