The checkerboard pattern is because Alice In Wonderland is based around the game of chess. They used the checkerboard pattern grass in the show because it’s association with things being odd, because of Alice in Wonderland.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Discord was the Cheshire Cat, or possibly the Caterpillar
