Eh. I really don’t think that Twilight’s ascent to alicorn princess status is the biggest issue. No, that’s just symptomatic of a much bigger problem:
 
The writers clearly favor Twilight over every single other character.
 
As such, they will do anything they can to make Twilight more powerful, more special, and just plain better than everyone else. Even if she hadn’t become an alicorn, some other outrageous display of favoritism would’ve radically altered the power balance in the show, and I predict that, as time passes, the writers will make Twilight even more absurdly superior to everyone else.
 
That is, of course, if such a thing is possible.
