The Common Tater

A somewhat happy, bittersweet image. An aging Trixie, nearing the end of a long life, shares a moment of affection here with her loving, immortal spouse.

I don’t see how anyone would get the impression that it was all smiles, as I never implied that it was…at least, I think that I never implied that Man from Earth was all smiles.

The reason I post it is because it does not dwell on the nihilistic aspects of immortality, which is something I’ve seen way to much of in fiction. It (Man from Earth) is a very thoughtful analysis of immortality, and all the questions that raises regarding how individuals deal with both being immortal (John Oldman) and dealing with immortals themselves (the rest of the characters).

As I have said before, I dislike how immortality is seen by some people as inherently nihilistic, and Man from Earth counters that view, not through being “sunshines and smiles”, but by actually analysing what immortality would mean in a practical sense. It’s not a case of “stop being so negative because of all these positive attributes” but “if you put some more thought into it, you will see that it’s not as negative as it seems.”

The way you went on about it, I would think the movie had immortality as all smiles.

But since that’s not the case….just let us have our Im-blues, huh?

At least stop posting the title as if it were a good defense against it.

How is it a hole? It makes ontological sense within the story, and even though Oldman shows regret and sadness for some things he’s done, and for having to move on every so often, it does not devolve into nihilism.

You realize one of the central plot elements of that film is that the main character was always on the move so that no one would notice his agelessness, and thus never had to deal with losing loved ones. And that when he finally did in the end, he didn’t exactly take it well?

Why not? Living forever is pure upside. Life is awesome, man.

Plus you know, Celestia, Luna, Cadance, and Spike are all going to be around to keep her company at all the funerals.
