That explains Lyra being in every flashbacks in the show, looking the same as they do in the present. Perhaps Berry Punch too.

So, Lyra and Bon Bon have been alicorns themselves at some point in the ancient past and were also immortal. Since then, they have renounced their winged status (and horned in the case of Bon Bon for unknown reasons) and live amongst the people who remain blind to the truths of their previous lives after generations have passed.
 
To ensure their immortality goes unnoticed, they have lived quietly and humbly in small villages throughout Equestria over the centuries, not making a fuss or making deep friendships outside of each other’s and possibly that of Celestia, Luna, and any other immortals amongst the ponies.
 
What’s hot for them this particular century? Ponyville.
 
That, or, possibly, we are looking at ancient relatives of the two (cutie marks unshown) and pony genetics works to possibly mimic relatives at some stage down the tree.

It makes sense that Luna still feels distant and detached from the average pony. It’s probably not even about the annual banquet, Celestia’s had a thousand years of practice at breaking down the barriers that her godhood and royal status have placed between her and the average citizen while still maintaining her “mother to a nation” distance.
 
I can only assume Twilight will try to look up jokes in a book and they’ll fail to land.
