verulence: At Everfree Northwest Cathy Weseluck said she likes to think that Spike and Fluttershy would make a cute sort of calabash brother and sister dynamic. She also said her secret talent is ping pong and agreed Spike could totally be good at ping pong randomly too. Of course my first thought was “I NEED TO DRAW THIS SO I CAN DIE”.

It’s a Hawaiian thing. It refers to people that act like extended family but aren’t actually related.
The name comes from the large serving bowl that everyone shared out of at mealtime,(which would include an extended relative or close friend) but unlike with the Maroon people that had bowls made out of actual calabash gourds the Hawaiian ones were made with koa wood, usually.
