My headcanon is that the pins really did hurt Spike and that his scales have nerve endings causing lots and lots of pain for him, but that Rarity enjoyed his pain.

Hmmm, well that’s fair enough i suppose. ^.~
My own headcannon is that Spike was raised (at least in part) by Celestia herself, is technically a Prince, and is simply too nice and legit to use his status for personal gain, i.e. as a selling point to Rarity.
Though, i may have to tweak that a bit after seeing Equestria Games. xD
Personally, I wish I was Spike and Rarity stuck pins in me. :3
