The decoupler mechanism in the limb effectively cuts off sensation in the limb until the limbs themselves are either detached or reattached. It’s like a dentist using anesthetic when he’s drilling in your teeth. The nerves connecting the arm to the automail aren’t being detached, but the ones in the decoupler, which feel no actual pain, are.

yeah? well, that can’t be! you can’t fully remove an automail to replace it with another one! what about the nerves? they are suppose to be always connected to the automail now! have you forget you can still feel with them? taking all the automail out is like taking the whole limb out again! ahhhhhh!
