A third is not a whole, and if not fot the war then no nuclear arms race, that things like ICBM’s, that the boosters of where use in the space race that is what lead to the moon landing.

Technically, the Soviets were always lagging behind in terms of most international trends, and their lack of cohesive power sorta started with their pitiful attempt to invade Afghanistan.

But the point is that it DID. It is intricately tied to the continuing fall of the soviet empire which affected a third of the whole world. Just because your effed up schools don’t teach you what it really means doesn’t make it irrelevant. My guess is OP picked it because its the only image they could relate to that period or even knew about. Trust me if PB was still around I would have thrashed him one too.

I’m sorry, maybe I need to make my point a little more clear, the fall of the berlin wall didn’t have an effect on the whole on humanity, same as WW2, my point is you can’t make your argument based of one event overt the other for being important human history over the other when it didn’t effect the whole of the world like the moon landing.

heh, what Stricken said. Also this ‘argument’ you’ve brought up falls both ways. A single country is hardly representative of humanity, especially one single battle of an entire theatre. Maybe it was rough as hell out there, but it was hardly even a turning point in the Japanese side of the war much less the entire war in general (that’d be Midway)
 
Another way it differs vastly is that it’s celebrating a simple military victory while the other two entries celebrate a kind of ‘freedom’ taking place. One, from an oppressive split, the other, from the oppression of gravity and being bound to the earth. It simply does NOT fit no matter how many times you try to hammer that star-spangled cube into a circular hole.

No Niggoslav, you don’t grasp the higher concepts, it’s HUMAN history, as it in has to do with HUMANS, not just one country or another but as a whole, last I checked the US and Europe both have a HUMAN population.

Anyway the point is the equivalent event to the other two from the same period would either be a photo of the surrender to Nimitz, or of the atomic bomb.
 
Using Iwo clearly paints the PB OP as an American, or some odd Aussie with an American fetish (those exist too).
 
If we’re to go the other way we would change Berlin wall to Kursk, and moon landing to Vietnam.

To be fair, WW2 was split between (mainly) the European and East Asian theaters. Japan was a huge aggressor that killed almost as many Chinese as the Germans did to the Soviets. Plus, it lasted longer than the one in Europe, so it was more than just for Americans considering the stuff we did for the Allies.

Look Niggoslav, depinding on where your from changes what every image of the events means to you, to people in the US what come to mind for berlin wall is Reagans line “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” but not so much for others in the world, so the point is you it’s all relative.

Wasn’t the Iwo Jima photo also staged? I heard it was like a reshoot or something, like they planted a second flag.

Ah, but the quest to get to the moon inspired many technologies and advancements that were either previously theory or too expensive to mass produce. Also there was more than one country involved in the race, and the countries too poor to attempt it chose sides as cheering sections.

True it’s a singular event, but it’s a well known image use to remind people of the WHOLE of the war…

It’s a singular event. It didn’t spell out “Final days of an empire.” It didn’t signify the total impending collapse of the Japanese economy and its government.
