After carrying a bunch of rocks, my phone feels like a feather…

Okay… this one doesn’t seem to get very good compression with a 100 quality jpeg.. so isn’t a very good example.. buuuut
 
PNG: 6.64mb  
100 quality jpeg: 5.78mb  
99 quality jpeg: 4.24mb  
95 quality jpeg: 2.94mb  
80 quality jpeg: 1.73mb  
0 quality jpeg: 457kb
 
Tested with a PNG ran with the default compression level of optipng and jpegs were NOT run with jpegtran (a lossless compression method for jpegs.. which I don’t know how to use… but derpibooru automatically runs jpegtran on all jpegs)
 
Of course, you DRASTICALLY lose efficiency the lower you go.. REALLY not recommended to go below 80 quality…
 
I prefer 99 because it doesn’t create much jpeg and reduces the file size a lot.. of course, even a 100 quality jpeg will butcher gradients and make them look 256 colorish (blame the stupid quality of jpegs… they still use shitty jpeg compression instead of more efficient jpeg compression… like jpeg2000 or even compressing with H.265 with the still-image compression)
 
It said that H.265 gets like 40% more efficiency than standard jpegs with quality versus file size…

It’s like mp3s versus Opus/mp4s… why are we still using mp3s?
 
I mean, if you really want to compress something…. 96kbps with Opus gives close to transparent compression (not quite, but it really does sound quite good)
 
 
Here’s a comparison… I tried to about match the bitrates between both… but both use VBR, so it’s not exact
 
I forced the lowpass filter to 16khz on the mp3… otherwise it turned it down to freaking like 7 or something and made it sound really not crisp at all :/

Heck, this is 48kbps.. it doesn’t sound great, but it’s not like god awful or anything

Heck, 40kbps (VBR, codec has trouble on pianos and stuff so the bitrate is a little higher on those… even then, it jumps to about 48 and then goes back down to 40)

Although, at 40kbps it really depends on the song… like this one doesn’t sound as bad as the Emerald Eyes one would have

But if you tried to do 40kbps with mp3, heh, GL with it even being the slightest bit listenable… even for voice that’d be… pretty bad… well, I guess if you did mono with voice it wouldn’t be TERRIBLE but… eh…
 
But Opus is the best codec out there, currently… it’s about 10% more efficient than Apple AAC and 40% more efficient than mp3… well, depends on the bitrate… the lower you go with Opus, the more efficient it becomes versus mp3… so it’s far more than 40% at 40kbps… because 40kbps with Opus sounds at least around the quality of 80-90kbps with mp3
