Yes, that’s normal. Sad for those who care but normal. Tumblr is not responsible for the backup of the data, same for twitter, it happened a while ago with the blog of a google service user, almost two decades of art lost.

Besides derpibooru, there’s also the wayback machine to archive web pages  
You need to establish a list of web pages to save that can only be done via the help of the community. The help of an artist posting images asking for help and the link to this thread would help.

Sadly true. Even tho there are loads of booru and people spreading the art it’s impossible to save everything.

I lost a piece of art recently, when I realized I didn’t save. I contacted the author but he willingly got rid of it. And there doesn’t seem to be a backup.

Some of my friends keep saying furaffinity may be a viable alternative but really, it’s way too outdated. I’ll keep posting there but I wouldn’t want it to replace tumblr.

Newgrounds might be a good bet, their twitter seems pretty open to the influx. Wonder how the existing users there will react, though.

For folks who aren’t sure about this, it is a real thing. Basically it’s an open source distributed social media, file sharing, and blogging … let’s say “platform” for lack of a better word … that decentralizes the services into a public cloud of participating servers - there’s more information on wiki
 
It’s kind of the grandchild of “GNU Social” AKA “Laconica”, but instead of just being for microblogging is now able to do other fun stuff.

Told ya, unfortunately part of it was hijacked by malicious entities, corporations had and still have a part in that, the protocol that is activipub is part of that hijack it was pushed by unethical people who did not have the network/communities in mind and began to EEE the initial effort.  
Technically speaking Ostatus and activitypub are the same it’s simply into who’s hands the direction of it development is in, the best direction people can go, from my pov, is PostActiv or Pleroma for server software.

In some sense we are all responsible for this kind of abuse, first because none or very little of us participated in government groups to stop such abuse of laws and secondly the educational system does not educate everyone early on how to recognize good and bad networks technically and legally speaking.

I’m sorry, but what you’re describing is far, very far from simple. After looking into it, it’s an interesting idea, but it’s so inaccessible and confusing, that you can’t really expect anyone who isn’t into that sort of technobabble to join. Especially artists.

No, I’m saying that because I think that is what’s gonna happen. I don’t have a tumblr, actually, or twitter, so I don’t follow anyone anywhere (I have my ways of keeping up with things). I’m just saying that most people will probably just migrate to twitter because, call me a prophet, I’m feeling it’s coming.

Sure. The big difference is that tumblr was always very jumpy when it comes to porn. All sorts of accounts was getting shut down on first notice for all sorts of stupid reasons or no reason at all. To the point that Molestia’s blog was getting nuked over and over, and it wasn’t even porn, it was just suggestive. And twitter on the other hand has a bunch of porn actresses posting their porn photos, and people from pixiv posting borberline lolicon, and twitter doesn’t care and doesn’t do jack. I’m not saying that it can’t. Really, even if it was written in their terms of service that they won’t, they can always change their terms of service, it’s their platform. I’m saying that, from what I’ve seen so far, twitter doesn’t give a damn. If you aren’t posting actual pedophile material - you just need a “sensitive content” warning and go nuts.
 
And when it comes to software freedom and stuff like that - it’s all great and in a perfect world where everyone is techno savvy and vigilant - people would’ve killed for a technology like that, but in reality - unless it’s also convinient and easy to understand, people at large won’t care. Every step of extra effort required on a part of the user will push away waves of potential adopters. That’s just how it is. Just look at Linux vs Windows situation. Same story. Many are shaking fists at Microsoft and threating to go Linux, but most of them don’t, because even if it spies on them it’s still more convinient (and Linux has come a long way in last 15 years, but still).
 
But anyway, I think fediverse is an interesting idea, but I can’t see it catching on with artists leaving tumblr. And that’s really all I was saying.

I’m worrying about Artist that Uploads NSFW MLP images on Tumbler (Example・・・Pia-chan, Burstfire)  
They may Lose Place to post NSFW MLP images.
